The SEIU 775 Long-Term Care Training, Support & Career Development Network: A Blue Print for the Future
Authors: Ingrid McDonald and Glen Scott Davis, Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute and 1199 SEIU Training and Education Fund
This paper describes the development and vision for an SEIU-initiated network in Washington state, which will provide training, on-the-job support, and career development services for long-term care workers. It describes the services that SEIU's network will offer, including entry level training, peer mentoring, an apprenticeship program, adult education, and a 'caring for the caregiver'' workshop series. It also makes recommendations about the funding and organizational structure of the network.
This Blue Print is offered as a contribution to continued cross-stakeholder discussion about how to professionalize home care and strengthen the long-term care workforce in all settings through a workforce development approach to caregiver training. It should be considered in the context of other parallel efforts, including reimbursement reform, pay and benefit increases, culture change, and efforts to maximize independent living and consumer choice, which together will prepare Washington to meet the long-term care needs of the future.
