Sonia's Feeling Sad (From the "Books Beyond Words" series)

Authors: Sheila Hollins, Roger Banks, Lisa Kopper

ISBN: 9781908020093

Description:

This book uses drawings with a background story to explain the experience of having depression, and what helps people recover. It is designed to be understandable to people across a range of intellectual abilities. The following excerpt from the publisher’s website previews the story used with this topic:

"…she (Sonia) is very sad and avoids seeing her family and friends. At home, she cries a lot and prefers to be in bed – although she can’t sleep. Sonia’s GP (family doctor) says that she is depressed and suggests that she see a counsellor. Regular visits to the counsellor – over the course of a year - help Sonia to feel better, and she starts to enjoy life again.”

This book is part of The Royal College of Psychiatrists “Books Beyond Words” series, and is one of two such books on the topic of depression (click on the "Web Links" Tav above for a route to he Quality Mall listing for the other). “The stories are told through colour pictures that include mime and body language, to communicate simple, explicit messages. These help 'readers' to cope with emotions and events such as going to the doctor, bereavement, sexual abuse and depression.” The intent is to make the abstract and emotionally-laden information accessible to people across a wide range of intellectual abilities. Each book is set-up so a person with disabilities can page through it together with a support person. At the back is a bulleted "story behind the pictures" helping the support person to use them in talking about the difficult and/or complex life experience being addressed (click on the “Web Links” tab above to view a sample book online).
