Why This Is Important

Obtaining information about services, supports and resources for people with developmental disabilities sometimes is difficult. There are many federal agencies that operate programs intended to benefit people with disabilities. In addition, each state has agencies and organizations that play various roles in assisting people with disabilities. This department's main aim is to assist Quality Mall visitors in connecting with federal and state officials and organizations to obtain information and/or assistance directly from them. For example, "protection and advocacy systems" have responsibilities to ensure that people's rights are protected. Each state has a federally-funded protection and advocacy system. These systems have a national association (NAPAS). Through NAPAS, individuals can obtain information concerning the protection and advocacy system in their state. Think of this department as a kind of "yellow pages" directory that you can use to contact organizations that might be able to assist you.
